When Kraft Foods put forward a £10 billion bid, Cadbury rejected, calling it a “derisory” attempt to get Cadbury on the cheap. Everyone came together to support this decision, including Cadbury workers. Now Felicity Loudon is worried that her great grandfather’s company could end up out of British control. It just seems that the Birmingham confectioner is facing one drama after another…
But Cadbury isn’t just a company. Cadbury is a communityIn Birmingham. In the West Midlands. In the whole o Britain. It has helped to shape British culture and is very much a legacy.
Cadbury has provided Birmingham with jobs and has helped to improve working conditions since it all started in 1824. John Cadbury, a Quaker, believed that the main cause of poverty was alcohol. So here, he started the Cadbury legacy with an alternative to booze. He sold tea, coffee, confectionary and delicious chocolate. John was later joined by his brother Benjamin, and they were known to all as the famous ‘Cadbury Brothers’.
Even to this day, the Cadbury family still have many ties with Cadbury PLC and the area, even though they have not owned the company since the 1960s.
