Go Natural
March 10, 2010 – 6:00 am | No Comment

nat-eng-weekThere’s no better time for becoming one with nature than in March. As the daffodils start sprouting and the sheep start lambing National Science and Engineering Week invite you to re-acquint yourself with your natural surroundings with their ‘What on Earth Campaign’

As part of the campaign people are being encouraged to upload pictures of anything they spot in their garden/local park/school ground/hedgerows to the National Science Week site. www.whatonearth.org.uk/ For all those new to nature who think they may have discovered a new species, NSEW’s specialists from all fields of natural science will examine, identify and catalogue as many of the finds as they can. Everyone who uploads an image to the website will receive a free packet of seeds to help encourage biodiversity in their own back yard. British biodiversity (variety of life on earth) is currently under threat, so the aim is to get more people interested in the variety of wildlife out there. The area that uploads the most images to the site will win a green roof for their local community as an everlasting sign of their contribution to boosting biodiversity.

There are a few of schools in and around the Birmingham area vying for a green roof top.

Deansfield Community School – Wolverhampton , nr Birmingham
Aldridge School – Walsall
Windsor High School – Halesowen

The Lord Mayor of Birmingham, Councillor Michael Wilkes said: “This is an inspiring initiative from The British Science Association. Modern green roofs are an important application of science and engineering and are designed to achieve sustainable   living and encourage wildlife. Increasingly, town planners are looking to build more across the country to improve air quality, save energy and increase natural diversity, so it would be outstanding to have a best in class roof here in Birmingham for us all to appreciate. So everyone please pull out the stops and help us win this fabulous prize!”

So if you feel like helping out your community dig out your camera and your walking boots and see what you can find
